PROJECTS & COLLABORATIONS
out of my comfort zone

object no. 1
Oscar Xyh, 2022
Chinese ink on rice, 12 x 12 cm
object no.1 was created for a group show titled downsizing held at dblspce, Singapore.

The objective of the show was for artists to present their usual artistic practices in a condensed mode of presentation, to strategise and bring out the essence of their practice (as implied in the show title, to downsize).

During the conceptualisation of object no.1, an accident occurred. In the middle of drafting the skeletal structure of the work document, I had to leave my desk for a quick errand. When I got back to my desk, I find myself staring at the words "Chinese ink on rice". I had left out the word "paper" at the end. It was supposed to be "Chinese ink on rice paper". This little accident tickled my brain and the words "Chinese ink on rice" became stuck in my head. This gave me the idea of creating a literal work revolving around those words, which were the mediums to almost all of my art works as a contemporary ink painter. Then came the birth of a jar containing ink drizzled onto uncooked rice, which worked perfectly to the concept of the show, the representation of the essence of my works, and my artistic philosophy of embracing mistakes/accidents.

STORIES OF CARE: MY GIFT OF TIME & CARE
by Collective - [Nuraishah Binte Rashid, Sarah Kwek Jing-Wen, Carla Karishma Cantarella, Oscar Xyh]
2022
My Gift of Time & Care, presents a space within the viewer's mind to live through the lived experience of a palliative care nurse in their professional space, personal lives and self - as though they are speaking to the viewer. It offers an in-depth look into their role in the hospice providing day to day care for terminally ill patients – the challenges and emotions, the interdependent relationship between professional and personal – family support, self-care, self actualisation, their hopes for palliative care – leaving a legacy for new generation of nurses and clearing misconceptions of palliative care. The work stems from a grounding point of empathy, care and compassion which aims to honour the nurses, their experiences, family, patients and the hospice.
Sharing and learning is the concept that underpins the project and determines the final outcome which is an informal publication in the form of story cards - a translation of the nurses sharing into first-person accounts, and prompting questions - reflecting questions derived from the nurses first-person accounts. These story cards and prompting questions are packaged in a custom-made pouch, symbolising the gift of contributions the nurses have made in their profession, while its form allows for further reproduction and dissemination.

HOPE EXCHANGE
by "Huat Huat Siblings" Collective - [Evangeline Electra, Jassilyn Ng Jia Ling, Ang Li Ya, Oscar Xyh]
2022
Due to the pandemic (Covid19), the state of people's livelihood was greatly affected and so has their mental health. Uncertainty came in a blink of an eye, people became willing to go through desperate measures for answers and stability in their lives. Consequently, people gravitated towards more external sources of spiritual mediums such as; fortune-telling, palmistry, tarot cards, religion, to seek assurance.
Hope Exchange aims to fulfill the participant's desire and certain degree of desperation, by creating a safe space for them to receive a form of healing and comfort through words of affirmation, similar to how a person's belief would give them the hope they need.

Student responses to the Ng Teng Fong Roof Garden Commission - Rirkrit Tiravanija
2017
Titled: A Cup of ….
Duration: 25 minutes
The act of having tea might seem banal. Nevertheless, this simple act conjures a host of meanings and associations. We are intrigued by the ritualistic aspect of tea ceremonies in the installation. To explore this, we recreate the maze by marking the space with our movements and spatial positions. At the heart of the maze where we converge situates the tea house.
